RED HEDAYAT - STOP REPRESSIE TEGEN KOERDEN IN IRAN

Dear Iranian Ambassador,

The case of Hedayat Abdollahpour

I am writing to express my deepest concerns about the ongoing violation of human rights in Iranian Kurdistan, particularly in respect of executions, the critical condition of political prisoners, arrests of activists and the ongoing killing of Kolbares.

Primarily, the issue that has prompted me to put pen to paper at this critical time is the fact that Iranian Kurdish political prisoner Hedayat Abdollahpour, who has been on death row, has been transferred to an unknown place.

According to an Amnesty International report published on 12 May, Abdollahpour, who has been on death row since 2017 in the central prison in Urumieh, West Azerbaijan province, was transferred to an undisclosed location on May 9 2020 with no declared reason. https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/mde13/2309/2020/en/

Since then, his family has sought information about his fate and whereabouts from various official entities, including the central prison in Urumieh, the Centre for the Implementation of Sentences in Urumieh, prosecution offices in Urumieh and Oshnavieh, also in West Azerbaijan province, and the offices of the ministry of intelligence and the intelligence unit of the Revolutionary Guards in Urumieh. However, these official bodies have all refused to provide the family with any information.

According to information obtained by Amnesty International, in a distressing development on 12 May, the deputy prosecutor in Urumieh told his family: “When the ministry of intelligence and the Revolutionary Guards do not tell you where your relative is, you better refer to the cemetery.” https://www.amnesty.org/download/Documents/MDE1323092020ENGLISH.PDF

Therefore, I am requesting information about the place in which Mr Hedayat Abdollahpour is currently being held and assurances that he is well. I also call for the release of political prisoners and the abolition of the death penalty overall in Iran.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Demesmaeker
Belgian Senator and Former Member of the European Parliament
